Walking is exercising without realising it. It’s good for the mind, body and soul.
This story was made at a five-day community based digital storytelling workshop led by Dani Landau, Clodagh Miskelly, Penny Evans and Carolyn Hassan. Participants were members of Knowle West community groups.
The course took place at Knowle West Media Centre during June 2005 and was supported by Bristol’s Museums, Galleries & Archives.

My story starts with Marlene, my sister, having lung cancer. This made me realise that smoking is like playing Russian roulette.
I’ve already lost my sister Wendy to cancer, and a very dear father-in-law to throat cancer, so the fags had to go.
And a year later, to celebrate not smoking, and Marlene being clear for a year, myself and my sister Kay (who previously had had two heart attacks) walked the Bristol half-marathon, which then led me to do other sponsored walks.
I enjoyed the walking and, being worried about my health and putting on weight, I found the Knowle West Walking Group - went on my first walk on Wednesday the 16th June, then on the 19th of June I became a volunteer walk leader.
I know help on the One-Heart walks for those who can’t walk far, the Two and Three-Heart walks for those who can walk further, and help to lead and coordinate the Four-Heart walks for those more adventurous.
Walking is exercising without realising it. It’s good for the mind, body and soul. If you feel good, you look good, and it radiates to others around you.
My only regret is that my mum and dad not being around, only in spirit, to see the changes in my life, but with my ever-expanding family, and all my friends from the walking group, life is great. Because of not smoking I’ve gained so much. I’ve learnt that if you can’t give up for yourself, try for your family. I know it might not stop me getting cancer, but I will be able to fight it.
My story is still going on for me, and for Marlene who has got cancer back. Myself and my sisters are all fighting for her, and we are all being positive. I leave my story to be continued.
